Why Nash Ream Joined Patlytics: From KPMG, Houlihan Lokey, and Ocean Tomo to Shaping the Next Era of Patent Intelligence

Nash Ream has spent his career at the crossroads of intellectual property, finance, and technology. From his early days preparing expert and damages reports at Ocean Tomo to leading patent valuation projects at Houlihan Lokey and KPMG, Nash developed a rare perspective that connects the legal, financial, and strategic aspects of intellecatual property.
Now, as Customer Success Lead at Patlytics, Ream brings that multidisciplinary expertise to helping customers realize the full potential of AI-powered patent analytics. His journey from managing complex IP valuation engagements to joining one of the fastest-growing AI companies in the IP space represents more than just a professional pivot, it’s a reflection of how the next generation of IP professionals are embracing technology as a long-term partner in strategy, valuation, and decision-making.
A Career Spanning Every Corner of IP
Early in his career, Ream joined Ocean Tomo, one of the most respected names in intellectual property valuation and expert services. There, he gained firsthand experience preparing expert reports and damages analyses for some of the world’s most high-stakes IP cases. “They were a real innovator in the IP world,” Ream recalls. “I got the chance to do a lot of litigation work, understand how attorneys work and what matters to them most. ”
After Ocean Tomo, Ream moved deeper into financial valuation, helping clients determine the worth of their patents and intangible assets. That experience led him into investment banking, where he helped run the valuation group at Houlihan Lokey and as Vice President, advising companies on buying, selling, and monetizing IP portfolios.
From there, Ream joined KPMG, where he helped launch and grow an IP advisory practice from the ground up. At KPMG, Ream helped billion-dollar companies understand how to leverage their patents as assets. This primarily entailed managing and monetizing patent portfolios more efficiently.
Across these roles, one theme remained constant: intellectual property was the linchpin connecting innovation to enterprise value. And yet, despite the sophistication of IP strategy, Ream saw the same frustrations repeated over and over again.
The Turning Point: Seeing the Gaps in IP Analytics Tools
While leading IP engagements at KPMG, Ream was responsible for managing the firm’s patent analytics tools and software subscriptions, a role that revealed just how fragmented the IP technology landscape had become.
“When I was at KPMG, Houlihan, and Ocean Tomo, I always had some exposure to patent analytics tools. It was my job to go out and test and demo and manage our subscriptions for KPMG. So I had the benefit of getting a chance to try everything out, test it, try to learn it. And it really highlighted, I think, a lot of the pain points of the existing set of tools out there,” he recalled. “Some of them were great tools, but it was just too difficult to understand how to use them. Some of them had a very simple interface, but the underlying data was really problematic and had lots of bugs, lots of technical issues.”
These daily challenges gave Ream a clear sense of what the industry needed: a unified, intelligent platform capable of combining validity, valuation, and visualization in one place.
So when he discovered Patlytics, the vision resonated instantly.
Why Patlytics Stood Out
For Ream, what set Patlytics apart wasn’t just its technology, it was its leadership and the company’s long-term vision for IP. “What stood out to me specifically is the Paul and Arthur combo,” he says. “Arthur is probably a genius when it comes to technology and has a track record of building successful companies and technology. Paul is his perfect counterpart, someone who deeply understands IP and what practitioners actually need.”
That balance between deep technical innovation and practical IP expertise reflected what Ream had been looking for throughout his career: a company that truly understood both the business and legal sides of IP. The marrying of practicality and innovation is what Ream hailed as a guiding “north star” for AI companies, and he was convinced Patlytics had built not only a useful product, but a long-lasting team of dedicated individuals that he was ready to join.
“Patlytics is the only platform I’ve seen that can bring validity, infringement, and valuation together,” he explains. “For anyone working in IP strategy or valuation, those things are essential. Patlytics gives you the confidence that the data is sound and the insights are actionable.”
AI as a Partner for Long-Term Growth
Ream views AI not as a replacement for IP professionals, but as an evolving partner that helps them scale their expertise. “AI is evolving so fast that you don't need a solution that's 100% today—you need one that solves a lot of your problems now and keeps getting better.” he says. “But also realize that even if the solution is not 100% perfect today, it's not necessarily a reflection of the company, it's really a reflection of where AI is. It's developing so fast that if it's not perfect today, it is moving there very quickly. So you really want a product partner that you can grow with, is the way to think about it.” For Ream, Patlytics had struck the appropriate balance of staying on the cutting-edge of AI without sacrificing accuracy or attention to detail. This rings true for Ream today: “I think that’s a strong testament that we’re doing it right and we’re solving real problems for people.”
Now, his advice for teams exploring AI platforms is practical:
“If you’re going to test a platform, test it with your active cases. See if it fits your actual workflow. If it truly helps, you’ll know quickly, it’ll save you time, money, and headaches.”
Ream believes this pragmatic approach is key to separating meaningful innovation from the “AI noise” flooding today’s legal tech market. There is a lot of hype, but the real measure of success is when an AI tool integrates into your day-to-day work and makes it easier, faster, and more reliable.
A Vision for Smarter, More Connected IP Teams
Today, as part of Patlytics, Ream is helping customers achieve exactly that: bridging the gap between innovation, valuation, and real-world execution. His background across expert reports, financial valuation, IP transactions, and enterprise IP strategy uniquely positions him to understand what in-house teams, valuation professionals, and law firms need from their technology.
“Patlytics gives IP teams the clarity they’ve been missing,” Ream says. “Whether you’re assessing validity, managing a portfolio, or evaluating potential monetization, it brings everything together, data, AI, and workflow, into one cohesive experience.”
Ream sees his work at Patlytics as a continuation of what first drew him into IP: helping professionals turn complexity into opportunity. Patlytics doesn’t just support the work, it elevates it. It makes IP teams more strategic, more connected, and more confident in the decisions they make.
Looking Ahead
As AI continues to reshape how IP professionals work, Ream believes the winners will be those who treat AI as a partner, not a shortcut. For Ream, joining Patlytics is more than a new chapter, it’s a chance to help define that future. “Every role I’ve had built toward understanding how IP creates value,” he says. “Patlytics is where all of that comes together.”
