With over three decades of experience, James brings invaluable expertise in intellectual property litigation, appellate advocacy, and IP transactions, strengthening Patlytics’ mission to modernize patent workflows across prosecution, litigation, licensing, and portfolio strategy through advanced AI.

James is a nationally recognized IP litigator who represents major global companies across a wide range of industries, including Nintendo, Enterprise Holdings, Nexans, Soitec, Bosch, and QinetiQ. His practice focuses on high-stakes patent litigation and strategic IP counseling, with extensive experience guiding clients through complex disputes and transactions with significant intellectual property components, including M&A transactions, licensing agreements, and other commercial arrangements.

Throughout his career, James has been recognized consistently for excellence in patent litigation. In 2016, Law360 named him one of five “Intellectual Property MVPs” in the United States. He has been ranked by IAM Patent 1000 as one of the World’s Leading Patent Professionals for Patent Litigation from 2017 through 2025 and by The Legal 500 US for Appellate: Court of Appeals in 2018.

Before joining Baker McKenzie, James was a partner at Latham & Watkins and Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP, where he built a reputation for handling complex IP matters at both the trial and appellate levels.

In addition to his commercial practice, James is widely respected for his pro bono work. One of his most notable achievements was serving as lead counsel in the federal habeas corpus proceedings that resulted in the release from Texas death row and exoneration of Ernest Willis. His decade-long work on this matter has been featured in publications including The American Lawyer and The New Yorker.

James earned his BA in Political Science and Government from the University of Pennsylvania and his JD from New York Law School.
