Q&A with Max Reed: VP of Finance and Operations

thumbnail

Q: What drew you to Patlytics at this stage?

Max: The highest-leverage time to build scalable finance and operations functions is the sweet spot between when a company has proven product-market fit (with clearly scalable unit economics) yet is still early enough where you can establish strong foundations with minimal replacement or retraining of legacy organizational systems and know-how.

Patlytics is at exactly that inflection point. The company has real customer traction, exceptional revenue momentum, and a strong investor base, yet we’re still building the operating foundation that will support the next phase of scale.

Q: Having seen enterprise software from both the investor and operator side, what stood out?

Max: We’re entering a paradigm shift where AI is dramatically reducing the cost of innovation. As product development accelerates and feature parity becomes easier to reach, sustainable competitive advantage increasingly depends on protected intellectual property.

That puts Patlytics at the center of a major shift. The platform streamlines how IP is created, managed, and enforced while giving practitioners the speed and confidence they need to operate at a higher level. Paul, Arthur, and the team built something this market has needed for a long time, and the customer adoption speaks for itself. I’m excited to build the financial and operational foundation that supports what’s next.

Q: How do you think about building the financial and operational foundation for global scale?

Max: Building the right foundation early on is key and pays dividends down the road when done right and kept simple. Too often I’ve seen early-stage companies either wait too long to invest in proper infrastructure or overrotate by adding a bunch of unnecessary processes in the name of ‘professionalizing the business’ that only create friction. The simple framework I try to use for every decision is that if a system, workflow, or process doesn’t improve the customer experience or dramatically help the business increase velocity, it is probably not very high leverage.

Q: What are you most excited to build?

Max: AI isn’t just transforming how our customers work; it’s changing how we build companies internally. I’m excited to use these tools to create leaner, faster, and more scalable ways of operating while helping build the foundation that supports Patlytics’ long-term growth.
